Developing intellectual virtue

What is awe?

Strategies to use to develop intellectual virtue in the classroom

Awe in the classroom?

A high quality curriculum should have places where wonder and awe can be planned for. If not, perhaps finding opportunity in the curriculum for this to happen is something to think about. What trips, what resources, what opportunities for awe could you create in the classroom?

encourage intellectual virtues

Continue to encourage intellectual virtues as you deliver the curriculum. As highlighted earlier, critical thinking, reasoning and curiosity should always form part of a high quality curriculum.

reflection is a daily process

Reflection is a daily process for teachers (if it is not then it should be). Encouraging your students to do this for themselves through plenaries, discussion and sharing could also form part of the daily classroom routine.

Spot opportunities, be them caught, taught or sought

Being able to spot opportunities to have these discussions, whether caught, taught or sought will come as your experience deepens, but build this into your practice from an early point.

Chat with experienced colleagues

Remember to talk to more experienced colleagues. They will have experience and knowledge of opportunities that exist in the curriculum to help develop your practice and the opportunities to provide your students with.
